Human Resources, often referred to as HR, serves an important role in any company. Their purposes range everywhere from budget control and cost savings to employee satisfaction and conflict management. In the article Ten Reasons Why the HumanResources Department is Important by Ruth Mayhew, she discusses in more detail the differing roles that HR plays. In this blog post, I am going to summarize them into three categories.

One important role played by HR is creating the company
image. Companies want to be known as what Mayhew refers to as “employers of
choice”. In laments terms, this means that employers want potentials employees
to want to work for them, and they care about how the job force views their
company. One way that this is done is through planning company-wide charity
fundraisers. Doing things like this make the company one that values the
community and giving back, and this comes off as a positive to potential
employees.
Another responsibility that HR is tasked with is employee
satisfaction. Employees want to feel important in their job, and HR is tasked
that making sure that they do. This is done usually through occasional meetings
with each employee where they discuss how they feel their working experience is
going. Additionally, speaking with employees regarding potential issues is very
important when it comes to helping employees feel comfortable in their working
environment. This practice is referred to as conflict resolution, which ties in
directly with employee satisfaction.
One final task assigned to HR is the training and hiring of
new employees. This is very important, especially for companies that are
smaller or ones that have seasonal hires. Training new employees is expensive,
so it’s in the company’s best interest to keep their current employees rather
than hiring new ones more often. In addition, making sure that employees are
properly trained leads to a reduced turnover rate, which saves a lot of money
for the company.
In doing research for this post, I learned a lot about the
varying roles that HR plays in a company. HR is there for every step of the
employment journey. They are the ones that hire, the ones that make sure the employee
is satisfied with their work experience, and the ones that do everything in
their power to keep their employees. Without this piece of a company, the
business would be inefficient and lacking resources in so many areas.

Wow it seems like HR is one of the most important roles in a company! One question I had is how does one obtain a position in HR? Do you just move up within the ranks or are people hired specifically for the HR position?
ReplyDeletePeople obtain positions in HR through more than one way. One can obtain a degree in HR and hire directly into a company, but a more common way of getting into HR is transferring for within the company.
